Osteopathy is a regulated allied health profession focused on the musculoskeletal system — bones, joints, muscles, ligaments and the way they all work together. Osteopaths use hands-on techniques (soft-tissue work, joint mobilisation, gentle manipulation) to ease pain, restore movement and help the body function as a coordinated whole. Osteopaths in the UK are regulated by the General Osteopathic Council (GOsC).
Treatment shouldn't be painful, though some hands-on techniques produce a brief, manageable level of discomfort — especially on tight or guarded muscles. We constantly check in with you during treatment and adjust the intensity to what's comfortable. You're in control.
It depends on what's going on. For acute pain (sudden onset, recent injury) we often see meaningful change inside 2-4 sessions. For long-standing or complex problems it can take longer — usually 4-8 sessions of treatment, sometimes spaced further apart over a few months. We'll always be honest about what's realistic. We don't recommend treatment we don't think you need.
No. You can book directly with us. If we think your situation needs medical investigation (imaging, blood tests, specialist input), we'll tell you and write to your GP if that helps.
Loose, comfortable clothing you can move in. We may ask you to remove some outer layers so we can assess the area properly — you'll always be appropriately covered and we can leave the room while you change.
Yes. Pregnancy-related back and pelvic pain is something we treat regularly. The techniques and positioning are adapted for pregnancy throughout. Eliza and Lucy are particularly experienced with this.
Most major UK private medical insurers cover osteopathy with a registered osteopath. We're recognised by Bupa, AXA PPP, WPA, Aviva, Vitality and others. If you're using insurance, just bring your policy details — we'll handle the paperwork.
There's significant overlap. Broadly: physiotherapy often focuses on exercise-based rehabilitation; chiropractic on spinal adjustments. Osteopathy sits between the two — combining hands-on treatment of the whole musculoskeletal system with movement and rehab advice. Many patients have tried one and find another suits them better. There's no "right" answer.
Yes — we treat children of all ages, from babies to teenagers. Cranial osteopathy is a particularly gentle approach suitable for very young children.
Honestly, it usually doesn't — one session is rarely enough for anything but the simplest acute case. The first session is mostly about understanding what's going on and starting treatment. The change typically builds over 2-4 sessions. If something doesn't seem to be working, we'll regroup, reassess and adjust.
